The science camp started at 9 a.m. at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center. Campers had the opportunity to learn more about science around them. The campers moved to different stations in 45 minute intervals where they learned about different careers that are science related. Some of the science related careers that were represented at the camp included: environmental science, explosive chemistry, firefighting, kitchen chemistry and forensic science. As each station took place campers had the opportunity to experiment and participate in almost every experiment. Several youth and adult community volunteers helped teach conduct each track. This annual science camp is a positive hands-on experience for many of the youth in Ascension Parish.

Written by: Joy Semien

Thank you to our sponsors

Thank you to the many sponsors who help make the Louisiana 4-H Science, Engineering and Technology board and its programs possible.

Bronze Level Sponsors
B&B Rentals
Southside Machine Works
Submar, Inc.
Tony Lavespere

Additional Sponsors
Iberia Marine Service
People State Bank
Tensas Parish Farm Bureau
June Albert
First United Methodist Church
J & A Fusilier Famrs
Harvest Supermarket
Family and Friends of Board Members

SET Board Member helps parish learn about biofuels

Cole Griffin, State 4-H SET Board member, conducted the National 4-H Science Day Bio-fuel Blast experiment for the Junior Leaders in Union Parish. This year was a huge success. The campers enjoyed the different tracks they went to each day. The tracks held at LOST Camp consisted of Rocketry, Robotics, Videography, Forensic Science, Kitchen Chemistry, Outdoor Skills, Energy, and Wetlands.

In Rocketry, each student got to build their very own model rocket and launch it at the parade grounds. Before the students got to get their hands on the rockets, they learned about rocket safety. In this track, the youth learned the importance of following instructions. This track was taught by several SET Board members.

The SET Board members really got the youth thinking in Robotics. In this track they had to use their imagination to build a robot, strategize their plan on completing missions, and then program the robot to do so. The youth really stretched their skills on working together. The track showed them how without one part of the group, the whole thing falls apart.

Videography was a big favorite at LOST Camp. The students learned the proper way to run a video camera and some new tricks to shoot better video. After a quick lesson, Mr. Randy allowed the campers to put their new knowledge to the test. The students got into groups and shot their very own videos. They imported, edited, added music, and even did voice-overs on the computers. The students really enjoyed this track.

The students who got the opportunity to visit Mrs. Ruby in Forensics had a blast. In this track the kids got to create blood splatters, visit crime scenes, and looked at sensor scopes. They got to see videos of robberies caught on tape and discussed fibers and how clothes fade. The students’ heads were filled with many interesting things in this track.

In Kitchen Chemistry, the 7th and 8th graders here at camp got to make lots of stuff. Silly putty, bubble gum, marshmallows, muffins, mayonnaise, and even butter were among the recipes. The kids really got a chance to get their hands dirty in this track. Overlooking the food, the kids also learned about chemical reactions and how they work. They were taught what chemistry is, and then actually did it.

The Outdoor Skills track allowed students to practice outdoor activities including archery, laser shot and rifle.

In the evenings the board members put on fun events including "Walking on Water", a talent show and a slip-n-slide. Everyone had lots of fun and the board members did a wonderful job.

If you would like to learn more about LOST camp visit the LSU AgCenter 4-H Web site at http://www.louisiana4h.org/. Along to share their ideas were, Joshua Hippler and Micah Patout, members of the State SET Board. The main purpose of this meeting was to finalize plans for the 2009 4-H University, but this does not mean that we did not enjoy ourselves. Much of the planning was done during the fourteen hour drive to Tennessee. The next day we went whitewater rafting and spent the rest of the afternoon cleansing ourselves in the Blue Hole. When the water level at this swimming hole is raised, class six rapids are form. This was also the starting point for the 1996 Olympics. This is a great example of how being on a state board can give you the opportunity to make difference in the Louisiana 4-H program and have an amazing time doing it.

Written by Desire Taylor, Executive Committee

SET Board members win big at the 2009 4-H University

SET Board members took home honors as state contest winners and alternates as the LSU AgCenter’s 4-H University concluded Thursday night (June 25) on the LSU campus.

Hundreds were winners in 4-H competitions for trips and prizes. The club then works on this project for an entire year by educating, serving and reflecting on the specific cause. This year the club decided to focus on Wetlands.

The club is very excited about this project and all of the members have become involved. So far, we have created an exhibit on Louisiana’s perishing wetlands, educated the 4-H’ers in our parish on this topic, participated in Acorns of Hope and are planning a tour of the Atchafalaya Basin Swamp and National Wetlands Research Center. Our trip this summer will include a beach sweep and marsh grass planting on the Gulf of Mexico coast.

Pictured: Alia Stelly and Sadie Costanza (St. Landry Jr. Leaders) are shown preparing for the Wetlands workshop at Elementary Workshop Day

Written by Gabe Stelly, 2008-2009 SET Board member

Florida Parishes 4-H Outdoor Skills Field Day

The Spring Florida Parishes 4-H Outdoor Skills Field Day will be held Saturday, March 7th at the Southeast Research Station. The SET Board also has a photography club group on flickr. Check it out! The purpose of this Flickr group is to allow 4-H members to post photos they have taken that are 4-H-related or just neat photos they have taken in general. Some photos may have the potential to be used on the Louisiana 4-H website! There is also a discussion board so that members can chat with one another and get critiques on their photos. A photo competition is hosted once a month and the theme varies. The theme for September was “Black and White.” Once the month is over, voting will start for the entries. The person that receives the most votes will have their photo posted on the Louisiana 4-H website along with the Rovin’ Clover newsletter.
