Technology Safety

On January 5, 2010 Catlin Tatum, SET Board Member from Jackson Parish, conducted a workshop on technology safety at the Jackson Parish Courthouse. Catlin prepared pamphlets containing the general uses of cellphones and computers and the dangers of each. Youth were asked how they felt about cellphones and computers, especially browsing the Internet. Participants then discussed the pros and cons of these technologies. Each participant received a pamphlet. Afterwards they discussed how helpful technology, in general, can be be in their everyday lives. Catlin reviewed the pamphlet with the youth participants and pinpointed some of the more common dangers of cellphones and browsing the Internet. Youth were able to share their personal experiences with some of these dangers.

The 4-H members in attendance proved to be very interested and eagerly participated in the workshop.

Science is All Around

On April 17, 2010 SET State Board member Joy Semien held her second annual science camp. The science camp started at 9 a.m. at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center. Campers had the opportunity to learn more about science around them. The campers moved to different stations in 45 minute intervals where they learned about different careers that are science related. Some of the science related careers that were represented at the camp included: environmental science, explosive chemistry, firefighting, kitchen chemistry and forensic science. As each station took place campers had the opportunity to experiment and participate in almost every experiment. Several youth and adult community volunteers helped teach conduct each track. This annual science camp is a positive hands-on experience for many of the youth in Ascension Parish.
